A few days ago, while I rested between weightlifting sets, I watched a bird travel from one side of a broken down wooden fence to the other.

A learned a lot at that moment… The bird would carefully look into every hole. The would look first at every discontinuation in the fence, before moving forward. Something that we would take for granted, walking from one side to the other was a matter of life or death for the bird.

It needs to be sure there are no predators or traps that are waiting for it. And it never moved on without first looking CAREFULLY to see what was (or was not) hiding.

What I Learned

We need to be a little more careful in life. We need to analyze each decision with greater care. We need to be careful of those we allow to become our friends, and even more careful with whom we decide to love. If made incorrectly, these decisions could lead us to a premature death (physically or spiritually).

First, define your goals. After you have defined your destiny (the bird first had to know it wanted to cross the fence and it would not fly to do it) make decisions that will help you complete your objective. Analyze each situation and identify the route you will take. Befriend those who will help you achieve your goals. Friends influence each and every one of us, whether you accept it or not. It is best to find friends who know exactly what you want because there will be times when you have self-doubt and they will have to be the ones you will have to depend on to stay on track. A false and opportunistic friend will tell you what you want to hear and not necessarily what you need to hear. He/She will tell you to take the easier path. And finally, be careful with whom you love. If that person has not defined the same goal as you… It will never work. In love, two people unite as if one. It is impossible for you to go in one direction, chasing a dream, and have your loved one traveling in another direction. One will always pull the other and when it’s all said and done, neither will finish where they wanted to.
